Veralto turns secure coding training into a live attack-and-defend contest for its developers

Waltham, Massachusetts, USA

Industrial Machinery Manufacturing ยท 10,000+ employees

Veralto is a global leader in essential water quality and product quality solutions, spun off from Danaher Corporation in 2023. Its businesses, including Hach, Trojan Technologies, Videojet, and X-Rite, help ensure the safety and quality of water, food, and other essential goods worldwide.

Challenge

Generic security training rarely holds a developer's attention, let alone changes how they write code. Veralto needed a format that could get developers of different backgrounds to genuinely engage with secure coding, not just sit through another mandatory module.

Solution

Veralto ran a live SecDim WarGame for its developers. Instead of watching a demo, developers wrote real security fixes, published their code, and then had other developers actively attack it, learning to both defend and attack applications in the same exercise.

Result

The team loved it. Gamification with real code turned a training session into a genuine attack-and-defend contest, the kind of hands-on engagement generic training never gets, and a first real sign of a security-minded culture taking hold across the group.

“We used SecDim to provide a WarGame contest for developers of different backgrounds. They loved it. SecDim allows teams to learn both how to defend and attack applications, and students can learn from each other while understanding how to defend their code, in a wargame style. What I loved is the ability for developers to create security fixes and publish their code for others to attack. Gamification with real code.”
